The author did win the Nobel prize, so he’s not a bad writer But it paces nicely and continuously so that it becomes a really nice to book to get lost it, and pick up anytime. In fact, I cannot help but feel, after reading Gao Xingjian, that part of the Chinese ambivalence about their first Nobel Prize winner comes from Gao’s stubborn rejection of any nationalist label.
