Clavell wrote King Rat which is very good, and especially Shogun. I can’t say for sure, because Uris covered his tracks really well.

The description of the Berlin Airlift is quite vivid as is the inter-action between people of the five nations involved as the three major Western Allies rub along with the Soviet occupiers of East Berlin and East Germany.

Leon Uris is the best at the historical novel genre. I have read some of the negative reviews of this book which focus, for instanceon the sexism and stereotypes, and I agree with those comments. The unadulterated adulation of American heroism was a little too contrived, and did not help the cause. The title should be at least 4 characters long.
I started missing out on historical facts, unlike as was in the first two parts. If you have read Exodus by Leon Uris, you know he tends to write from a particularly strong viewpoint. Meanwhile, Soviet forces blockade Germany in a bid for power, and the Western Allies must unite to prevent a communist takeover. And the list of engineering and problem-solving firsts goes on.

The terrific first half inverts the standard WWII dynamic by placing the conquered Germans as withered husks to be exploited by foreign powers, starved and raped by occupying forces, lwon almost pitied.

I read it it with great enthusiasm as it was history which occured during my lifetime and in fact, my Army time was extended over the Berlin Wall Crisis in Uris weaves fictional characters in to historical events with skill, even if some character depictions run flat. Through the massive success of his novels and his skill as a storyteller, Uris has had enormous influence on popular understanding of twentieth-century history. Russia was ridiculously guilty of blatant lying and trickery, at least according to Leon Uris.
The book also attempted to show how German and American attitudes and culture differ and the problems it created for de-Nazification.
TOPAZ is another one – about cuban blockade. It makes me proud of the men and women who risked so much, and the determination of America during that time. I just wish we could add an epilogue forty years later with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
If you are like me, and like SOME of those details, leoh are more interested in the people involved in the story, then you will probably need to adopt my method of reading this book, along with a healthy dose of skimming over certain sections of the story.
Uris’ research skills and his talent of weaving historical facts into his fictional storyline are amazing. Uneven character and story development marred the quality of this work for me. Uris was married three times. We will find a way to make that item lighter.
